John Poppie

John Poppie (Jack) March 3, 1936 - October 30, 2012 passed away at home with his family in Litchfield Park, AZ. John was a long time resident of Upper Lake, CA. John was born in San Francisco, Ca to Ruth and Alfred Poppie. He attended school in Redwoood City, CA and graduated from SF Naval Shipyard Welder apprenticeship. In 1957 he joined the San Mateo County Sheriffs Dept. as Deputy Sheriff and was promoted to Sergeant and Detective. In 1969 he and his wife, Mary, purchased the Rod N Gun Station in Upper Lake, which they owned and operated until 1992 when they opened the Super 8 Motel also in Upper Lake, CA. They retired together in 2002 and traveled the United States. Through out his life he enjoyed many activities. He played baseball, raced motorcycles, restored cars, loved to fish and golf and spent many days on the lake with his family water skiing. He was a member of the Lake County Trap Club, Lake County Airmen Association, Buckingham Country Club Golf Course in California and the Wigwam Country Club in Arizona. He served as an Upper Lake School Board member, UL Volunteer Fireman and Lake County Sheriff’s office reserve volunteer. John was a loving family man survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary E. Poppie (Learned); his four daughters Sandra Poppie, Kathryn(Dan) Riesland), Linda(Charlie) Byrd and Susan(Bill)Plaumann; his grandchildren James(Brande) Leffew, Robert Leffew, Tristan and Meagan Johnson; his great grandchildren Katelyn and Ryan Leffew. Preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Alfred Poppie and sister, Patricia Meri. A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. with service at 11 a.m. Nov 5, 2012 at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center, 12420 N. 103rd Ave. in Sun City, AZ. Burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 10045 W. Thomas Road in Avondale, AZ. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the American Cancer Society.
