Obituary

David John Berg, beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and coach, passed into the presence of his Lord on the afternoon of October 17, 2026. He was 87.

David was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, on June 20, 1939, to Paul and Wilma (Marts) Berg. When he was two, the family moved to Tacoma, Washington, where his father became pastor of Tacoma Alliance Church. It was there that David’s love of baseball, and of sports in general, took hold. It would stay with him for the rest of his life.

David was only nine when his father died, and the family soon moved to Bremerton. Even as a boy, he was a leader. He organized a city-wide baseball team where he pitched and played infield.

He attended Bremerton High School through his junior year and served as class president. In the summer of 1956, his family moved to Seattle, where he started his senior year at Lincoln High School. After Christmas break, he transferred to King’s, where he graduated with the class of 1957.

Two years later, David went on a blind date where he met Marvella Cain and they were married on December 30, 1961.

David earned his B.S. in education from Seattle University in June 1964 and began teaching at King’s that fall. During those years, he and Russ Lance fully designed what is now Mike Martin Gym, completed in early 1968. That summer, David was hired by George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon, as head basketball and baseball coach, and he also taught physical education. After four years in Newberg, he took a teaching position at Pleasant Hill High School, just west of Eugene, where he taught from 1972 to 1978.

Russ Lance, who had been the reason David was offered the job at George Fox, would shape his path once more. In the summer of 1978, Russ and his wife, Fran, stopped by Pleasant Hill to tell David that a history position had opened at King’s. David was hired and returned to the school he loved, where he taught and coached until his retirement in 2011. Over the years, he taught U.S. History, World History, Washington State History, Bible, Geography & Drivers Ed.

In 44 years of coaching, mostly at King’s, David coached more than a thousand players in basketball, baseball, football, and sports camps. He coached his sons Dan and Brian, his daughter Lisa, and two of his grandsons. He was always coming up with innovative strategies to help his teams succeed.

David and Marvella also led high school spring break mission trips for 26 years, beginning in 1981.

Raised in a Christian home, David was first and foremost a man whose life was marked by his love for Jesus Christ. His children say he constantly displayed the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control. His faith was evident in how he fathered, how he taught, how he coached, and how he lived.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marvella; his children Shelley (Glade) Hanson of Surprise, AZ; Dan (Tressa) Berg of Myrtle Point, OR; Lisa (Chris) Egger of Mulino, OR; and Brian (Deana) Berg of Greenwood Village, CO; 11 grandchildren: Tyler (Heather) Hanson, Stacey (David) Sullivan, Zech (Vivian) Berg, KC Berg, Madison (Cody) Park, Cameron (Ariel) Egger, Artie Carpenter III, Dalton Egger, Brady (Carly) Egger, Asa, Simeon and Junia Berg; and 14 great-grandchildren: Malcolm, Palmer and Heath Hanson, Hazel, Wesley, Teddy and Marygold Sullivan, Rylee, Avery, and Easton Park, Iva Emery and Kynzer Egger, Aaron Berg, and Vera Berg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Wilma Berg, His brother Pat O’day (Paul Berg) and his brother Daniel Berg.

The family asked that remembrances be made in the form of a contribution to the King’s Tuition Assistance Program in Memory of David Berg. Remembrance can be made at giving.kingsschools.org
