IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Herbert John
Dietrich
July 22, 1938 – December 15, 2025
Herbert Dietrich, died in 2025, and had lived until his late 80’s. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA in the late 1930’s. Herb was happily married for 66 years. He leaves behind his six children: Herb Jr., Debbie (Ed) Matthews, Barb McCracken, Joe (JoAnn), Tom, Jim. His legacy continues through 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, each of whom carries forward his humor, intelligence, and unmistakable spirit. He is also survived by his brother Hubert (Eloyse) and many nieces and nephews.
Herb was proceeded in death by his parents, Albert and Marion Dietrich, his brothers- Albert Jr, Charles, Albert B., Robert, Norbert, Wilbert, Gilbert, Philbert and his sisters Marlene and Dolores, daughters-in-law Terry and Karen.
A man of formidable intellect, Herb earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and built a distinguished career with Bell Labs, Western Electric, and AT&T for 33 years. After retirement, he and Vee moved from Salem, NH to Sun City, AZ in 1995, where he fully embraced life on his own terms. In 2018, they moved to Sierra Winds Independent Living in Peoria. As a youngster Herb enjoyed fishing on the river at his family cottage and enjoyed golf after moving to Sun City. He loved to tinker and could fix anything. There are many fond memories of the family summer vacations spent in Tionesta, PA at the beloved Camp Bert, as well as the numerous RV trips to Disney World. He had a passion for family history and assembled a wonderful archive of photos, newspaper clippings and obituaries to be shared with future generations.
Described by those who knew him best as “a real character”, Herb was generous, endlessly expressive and unapologetically himself. A lifelong Catholic , he loved Jesus with all his heart and spoke openly and often about faith, morality and truth—frequently pontificating, always certain and rarely quiet.
One of the greatest voids left by his passing will be the absence of his many daily emails—messages filled with commentary, wisdom, observations, humor, warnings and declarations that kept family and friends informed, challenged, and entertained.
Herb Dietrich lived boldly, spoke freely, loved deeply and left no doubt that he had been here. He will be profoundly missed and fondly remembered.
Herb’s family would like to thank Sierra Winds for the many years of friendship and support during this difficult time.
There will be a memorial mass said for him at St. Elizabeth Seton Church at a later time.
