It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of James Rice, age 62, of Sun City, AZ (formerly of Central Minnesota). Although Jim had struggled with a plethora of health issues, his abrupt death on Thursday afternoon left his family and friends shocked and heartbroken.
James was born February 26, 1964 in Willmar, Minnesota to Betty (Haugen) Rice and William Rice. From his earliest days, Jim loved being outdoors and enjoying all the four seasons that Minnesota offered. Whether it be hunting, fishing, or camping, he felt most at peace being outside under the open sky.
He was an avid and passionate golfer who spent countless happy hours on the golf course, perfecting his swing, while enjoying the company of friends and family. He passed this passion for golf onto his beloved son, Willie. These memories of sharing time outside were priceless.
Despite later health issues, Jim continued to spend as much time outdoors with family and friends. He renewed his passion for golf by, volunteering as a (Sun City, AZ) Ranger and supporting (AZ) Special Olympics Golf Teams in the West Valley. He brought joy, laughter, and love to everyone he met. His wit, warm smile, and kind heart made him beloved and respected by all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Patti, son, Willie, mother-in-law, Peggy Dosch, sister-in-law, Tracy Stanford, sister, DeAnn Rice, brothers Craig (Sharon) Rice, John (Carol Ness) Rice, nieces: Linnea Epsky, Renee Rice, Jessica Rice, Erin (Jacob) Pinch, Morgan Stanford, and nephews: Hans Nelson, Ethan Stanford as well as Aunts MinaLee (Bob) Stanley and Mariel Haugen and Uncle Allen (Marcial) Rice and the wide expanse of cousins, extended family, friends, and co-workers.
He was preceded in death by both parents and grandparents. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donation be made in Jim's name to the American Cancer Society https://www.cancer.org and Special Olympics of Arizona https://specialolympicsarizona.org/.
Jim's spirit will live on in all who knew him every time the sun rises over a quiet fairway or a gentle breeze moves through the trees!
