With hearts full of both sorrow and gratitude, we remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Marilyn Elizabeth Bennett, who passed away on July 24, 2026. Born on November 17, 1944, Marilyn brought warmth, compassion, and a spark of joy everywhere she went. Her journey—filled with adventure, hard work, and the deepest love for family—leaves behind cherished memories and a legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

To her beloved husband, Gene Bennett, Marilyn was not just a partner but a constant source of companionship and laughter—always ready with a gentle word or a dazzling smile that brightened even the most ordinary days. She was a devoted mother to Gina Giles and Stephanie Vela, guiding them with innate wisdom, a radiant spirit, and encouragement in all their endeavors. Marilyn found immense joy in welcoming John Giles, her son-in-law, into the family.

As a grandmother, Marilyn’s love knew no bounds. She proudly held the title of ‘the world’s greatest grandmother,’ steadfast in her dedication to Michael, Anthony, and Jacob Vela, as well as Sophia and Aidan Giles. Each grandchild remembers her tender hugs, the joy she took in spoiling them, and the magical holidays she orchestrated with spirited decorations, laughter, and a sense of celebration that made every gathering unforgettable.

Marilyn graduated from Glendale High School in 1963 and later earned her degree in International Business and Tourism. Marilyn’s professional journey was just as inspired as her personal one. She excelled as an executive event planner for Honeywell and Honeywell Bull, a role in which her creativity, meticulous organization, and people skills truly shone.

Family meant everything to Marilyn, and she was fortunate to share many memories with her siblings: her brothers Mike (and wife Brenda) O’Grady and Jim (and wife Mary) O’Grady, and her sister Deborah Spear (and husband Bob).

Marilyn’s zest for life was evident in her many interests. She was admired for her expert ‘green thumb’ and often found peace among her plants and in transforming spaces with her creative touch. An avid reader with a keen sense for finances, Marilyn had an uncanny ability to refurbish anything, turning the old into something beautiful and new. She infused brightness and love into every home she touched, always ready to help others create warm, welcoming spaces.

Ever the adventurer, Marilyn delighted in traveling to new places. Her fondness for trips to Laughlin, strolls through bustling shopping centers, and especially taking her grandbabies to Disneyland. She found delight in people watching, discovering stories in the daily lives around her, and imparted this sense of mindful appreciation to all who knew her. The holidays, in particular, were Marilyn’s time to shine—her decorations and celebrations became legendary, marking each season with festivity and love.

Those who knew Marilyn will fondly recall her infectious laughter, her adorable sense of humor, and the kindness she shared with everyone. Her beautiful smile was a source of comfort and happiness. for all lucky enough to be in her presence.

Marilyn joins in rest her mother Ethel Shafer and Jay Shafer, whose memories remain close in our hearts.

She leaves behind a family whose lives she enriched immeasurably: her loving husband, daughters and son-in-law, treasured grandchildren, siblings, and dear friends. They, along with all who were touched by Marilyn’s kindness and vivacity, will carry her memory forward—cherishing the laughter, lessons, and love she so generously bestowed.

Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating Marilyn’s extraordinary life during a Memorial Service at Menke Funeral & Cremation Center, 12420 N 103rd Ave, Sun City, AZ 85351, on August 7, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The family invites you to a reception immediately following the service.
