Vonda Lee Schmitt Maitlen, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2026, at the home of her daughter in Surprise, Arizona. Born on January 22, 1933, in Atalissa, Iowa, Vonda was the cherished daughter of Ralph and Grace (Aye) Schmitt. She was 93 years old.
Vonda lived a life marked by devotion to her family. On October 16, 1955, she married the love of her life, Robert Maitlen. Together, they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage, raising three children in a home filled with love and laughter.
Vonda began her career as an administrative assistant with Black Hawk Films before transitioning into a successful career as a realtor.
Family was the cornerstone of Vonda’s life. She is survived by her children, Leonna (Al) Kline, Taunia (Dave) Wilson, and Steve Maitlen. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Jenny (Josh) Horman, Melissa (Jeric) Armstrong, Michael (Kortnee) Kline, Meghan (Joe) Ridge, Nicholas Wilson, Josh (Erin) Maitlen, Ryan (Caitlyn) Maitlen, Brianna Maitlen, Cayla Maitlen, and Seth (Kassidy) Maitlen. Vonda was also blessed with 17 great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her later years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, her parents, her grandson Matthew Wilson, and her daughter-in-law Sue Ryan Maitlen. Vonda's strength and resilience in the face of these losses were a source of inspiration to all who knew her.
A private ceremony and burial will be held to honor Vonda’s life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Stephen Siller Tunnel To Towers Foundation, a cause close to Vonda's heart. This organization, based in Staten Island, New York, reflects her values of service and community.
Vonda will be remembered as a woman of grace, wisdom, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy of kindness and generosity will continue to live on in the hearts of those she touched.
