James Thomas Spurlock

James Thomas Spurlock, 86, passed away on April 30. A resident of Phoenix and Sun City since 1952, he had a 20-year career at the Mountain Bell Telephone Company AT&T and was a well-known hair stylist in the valley for decades. A skilled mechanic and authority on antique automobiles, Jimmy Spurlock was president and active member of the Horseless Carriage Club and the Veteran Motor Car Club for many years. He was active as well in the Telephone Pioneers of America, the American Legion, the Elks Club, and C.A.R.R.S. of Sun Cities.
Mr. Spurlock is a veteran of World War II, and served as master sergeant and crew chief for the 8th Air Force and the 7th Photo Reconnaissance Group in England from 1942-1945. He prepared many an aircraft for dangerous flights over occupied Europe and participated in such missions as well.
Mr. Spurlock was born in Doerun, Georgia and grew up in Chicago. It was there that he met and married his childhood sweetheart, Kathleen N. Spurlock, who passed away in 1978 after 37 years of marriage. In his retirement years, he lived in Sun City with the late Elsie J. Ryant, his mother-in-law and a beloved member of the family residence. Subsequently, he married the late Peggy Spurlock and they remained active members of the community in recreational vehicle travel clubs and at auto shows until her passing. He is survived by three sons and their spouses: William and Joy Spurlock of Temecula, CA; James and Patricia Spurlock of Alexandria, VA; and Neal and Regina Spurlock of Phoenix. He also has three grandchildren: Kathleen Spurlock of Tucson; Jennifer Spurlock of Temecula, CA; and the late Kristy Spurlock. He is predeceased by his brother, John Spurlock; his sister, Martha Miller; and his parents, John S. and Lois T. Spurlock.
